figurines of ghosts, naevus on swollen
areolae; two black suns;
two narrow-eyed visages
--selfsame on two hardened frames;
a dulled glisten
sometimes we are peerless before the glass
shimmer in murky opal
sometimes we erase landscapes from our eyes,
are thus enlightened
before blackened carcasses of trees
--or the deep sea held against
a skeletal reef--
sometimes things seem very dark*
