Umbra Penumbra

figurines of ghosts, naevus on swollen

areolae; two black suns;

two narrow-eyed visages

--selfsame on two hardened frames;

a dulled glisten

sometimes we are peerless before the glass

shimmer in murky opal

sometimes we erase landscapes from our eyes,

are thus enlightened

before blackened carcasses of trees

--or the deep sea held against

a skeletal reef--

sometimes things seem very dark*
